G. Love at the Starboard - Dewey Beach

G. Love plays The Starboard to a packed house

Posted On: July 5, 2011

His touring bus may have looked out of place in the small Dewey Beach parking lot, and his road crew may have been taken aback by The Starboard's intimate environment and laid back attitude, but there was no doubt that G. Love was exactly where he belonged when he returned to perform at The Starboard June 30.

G. Love's spirit, his classic rhythm and blues, guitar, vocals and harmonica rang out in the iconic beach haunt where he has performed annually since 2006. With musical roots embedded in folk music, the blues and Bob Dylan, G. Love and the intimate atmosphere of The Starboard create a perfect fit. The only thing more exciting than the audience's delight at being so close to the artist was his thrill at being so close to his audience...

Touchdowns for Kids raises funds for athletics programs

Posted On: June 30, 2011
More than 20 retired NFL greats traded their pigskins for golf balls during the 7th Annual Touchdowns for Kids Charity Beach Golf Tournament held June 27 at Kings Creek Country Club to raise money for the Rehoboth Beach Little League, Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach Junior Lifeguard programs, and Cape Sharks Pop Warner Football.

Established by retired Washington Redskins two-time Super Bowl winner Reggie Branch and The Starboard owner Steve “Monty” Montgomery, the Touchdowns tournament reflects the commitment of its founders to give back to their community.

“In these tough financial times, it’s more important than ever for all of us to pull together to be sure all of our kids here at the beach have access to activities so they can continue to grow through sports and athletics,” said Montgomery.

“This is part of everyone giving back,” Branch said. “It’s all about the kids, and that’s what keeps it real.”

G. Love playing free show Thursday in Dewey Beach

Posted On: June 27, 2011

When you look at the tour schedule for Philadelphia-born musician G. Love, a certain gig jump out at you.

It’s not necessarily July 9 at Chicago’s South Side lakefront as part of the multi-day Dave Matthews Band Caravan tour. Nor is it July 30 when the rapper and roots rocker surfaces in Japan for a set at the three-day Fuji Rock Festival, which usually draws 100,000 rock fans.

Instead, it’s his free acoustic show this week in little ol’ Dewey Beach that has the phone ringing off the hook at The Starboard, G. Love’s unofficial home base in Delaware.

Since 2006, Garrett Dutton (as his parents named him), has performed at The Starboard (2009 Del. 1) five times — all of which were surprise shows that were only announced the day of via The Starboard’s roadside marquee.

On Thursday night at 9, he will return for his first publicized show at the infamous Dewey Beach watering hole — and that is why fans who want to get up close and personal with the music star should probably get there early. (It’s first-come, first-served.)

“What started as a joke ended up being a little secret weekend gig I’ve done over the next few summers in a row,” G. Love says during a recent interview from an Ohio tour stop.

Additional police help crime drop in Dewey over Memorial Day weekend

Posted On: June 3, 2011

DEWEY BEACH POLICE OFFICERS,Town Manager Diana Smith, Commissioner Rick Solloway and Commissioner Zeke Przygocki, and The Starboard owner Steve “ Monty” Montgomery met with visiting officers May 29 to express their gratitude for their assistance through the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Gathering before the officers go on duty are ( l-r ) Montgomery, Dewey Beach Cpl. Brooks Jenny, Blades Chief Ed Cooke, Dewey Beach Lt. Billy Hocker, Blades Ptlm. Dustin Hamilton, Smith, Camden Pfc. Steven Bishop, Solloway, Przygocki, Camden Pfc. Jim Wood, Milton Lt. Derrick Harvey, Laurel Cpl. Adam Coleman, Laurel Pfc. J. J. Kansak, Laurel Pfc. Jerrod Haddock and Dagsboro Sgt. Harry Litten.

The 2011 Memorial Day Weekend criminal incident and arrest numbers are in, and Delaware Criminal Justice Information System Executive Director Peggy Bell says they look great for Dewey Beach.

The final figures released by Bell June 1 show that arrests fell from 67 in 2010 to this year’s 53, and reported incidents dropped from 42 to 29. With an estimated 35,000 people in Dewey over the weekend, Police Chief Sam Mackert says he could not be more pleased. “The primary cause of the continuing drop,” Mackert said, “ is the increased police presence in Dewey Beach over Memorial weekend.”

“ Three of our businessmen Steve “ Monty” Montgomery of The Starboard, Regan Derrickson of Nalu and Ponos, and Jim Baeurle of The Cove, Que Pasa and Lighthouse  got together and gave the town $ 6,000, and the town used that money to bring in 10 additional uniformed officers from other jurisdictions to help us out Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights during the busiest weekend of our summer season. This started last year, and we’ve seen amazing improvement,” Mackert said.

“ Memorial Day weekend is a major event in Dewey Beach, comparable to the annual NASCAR race weekend at Dover Downs. The donation we made to the town is a way for us businesses to give back to the property owners by bringing in additional forces to provide safe streets, help control street noise, and help deal with any other issues in the neighborhoods of Dewey during this huge event,” Montgomery said.

“ These results are exactly what we want,” said Montgomery. “ We want people to have fun and we want to encourage them to be respectful of our community and comply with our laws.”

“ Commissioners Solloway and Przygocki came up with the idea of treating Memorial weekend like a major town event last year,” said Lt. Billy Hocker, who was primarily responsible for coordinating use of the additional officers and those of the Dewey Beach Police Department. “ The weekend crowds take notice of the beefed up police presence and behave as they should. It curbs rowdiness, and complaints are down.”

Outside police departments that assisted over the weekend included Blades, Camden, Dagsboro, Delaware City, Laurel and Milton.

Hocker said the main issue when dealing with large crowds is controlling pedestrians, so he directed visiting officers to handle traffic issues and to deal with pedestrian traffic. “ Many of them are manning stationary patrols on Route 1, freeing up our seasonal officers for side street patrol,” Hocker said.

“ We want to focus our resources off the beaten path ¬keeping the noise down and keeping people safe.”

Sgt. Cliff Dempsey’s use of barriers also helped with crowd control. Borrowing additional barriers from Rehoboth Beach, he had them placed between the sidewalk and road at the circle at the end of Dickinson Avenue and at different locations along Route 1, earning the praise of Solloway, Przygocki and others.

“ It was common sense, and it worked. The traffic got through and the pedestrians were safely off the road,” Dempsey said.
